Located a league and a half south-east of Dieppe, the Château d'Arques rises on an arid and rocky hill overlooking two valleys.
The castle was built between 1040 and 1045 on a rocky outcrop overlooking Arques-la-Bataille, probably from the arches of an old 7th century bridge by Guillaume d'Arques, uncle of William the Conqueror.
Today it is in ruins and the interior is no longer accessible for security reasons, but the stone counterscarp path has become a place for walking. In front of the main door, the path is to the right and overlooks the moat which surrounds the building. As you progress, a breathtaking landscape reveals itself. Once the passage has dominated the meadows of Calmont and Gruchet to the west, it turns towards the south and reveals the traces of a drawbridge.
The gaze heads towards the East and stops on the valley formed by the confluence of the Béthune and the Varenne which will form the Arques.
